Widening Access - Yorkshire and Humber Mentoring Scheme

“The Leeds programme has been working for many years to make sure that it is inclusive and has undertaken a range of initiatives to increase diversity in each training group. This has included working with the other programmes in our region (at the University of Sheffield and University of Hull) to hold a series of targeted open days and a mentoring scheme for applicants from BAME communities.”

At present, many high-quality undergraduates, and recent graduates from racialised backgrounds choose to pursue professions other than Clinical Psychology. One reason for this may be a lack of contacts within the field, resulting in limited opportunities to think through career options and job/training applications.

As a result, certain ethnic groups are underrepresented within the clinical psychology profession, as compared to the populations that we serve. This scheme aims to “level the playing field” for high-calibre psychology undergraduates and recent graduates from racialised backgrounds across Yorkshire and Humber or neighbouring regions, in terms of accessing the clinical psychology profession.

Eligible candidates will be matched with qualified clinical psychologists in the region and a range of mentoring experiences will be offered. This is a rare and valuable opportunity to develop supportive and potentially lasting contacts within the field.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must be psychology undergraduates who are on track to receive a 2:1 degree and are considering clinical psychology as a possible career, or graduates who have a 2:1 degree in psychology or an equivalent qualification that enables Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership with the BPS. Graduates with postgraduate qualifications are also eligible. You will need to live or work in the Yorkshire and Humber area or hope to apply to the doctorate courses in Yorkshire.
