Service Evaluation Projects
Each year we support 30 Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClin) students to complete a small scale, local, service evaluation project (SEP). The aim of this university-based project is for our students to get experience of evaluating how a mental health service is operating. This is an assessed piece of work for our students. Below is some information about how conduct the SEP projects and some common FAQs. If you have any further questions please contact Research Director Beckie Yeates.
What are the potential benefits of a DClin student conducting a SEP for me?
Saving resources. Evaluation projects can be time consuming and may fall down the priority list. Our students can become an honorary 'researcher for hire' for your service for the duration of the evaluation. They will design and conduct the project for you, as part of their postgraduate studies which we hope saves your time!
Academic oversight. Our students receive research and academic training during a three-year programme. Whilst they are conducting the evaluation, the student will receive academic supervision from a designated Academic Lecturer. The Lecturer will guide the student on how to develop a SEP project design which meets your needs. Once the student has collected and/or analysed the evaluation data, they will produce a final report which is marked. Once any required changes are made, the report is made available to the commissioner. We hope our academic oversight and systematic marking process means you will have access to a high-quality evaluation and written report.
What are the potential disadvantages of a DClin student conducting a SEP for me?
Design leadership. Once a DClin student commences an evaluation for you, you will play a key role in helping the student to understand your service context and evaluation needs. The student and their Academic Supervisor will lead on the design of the evaluation, because the project is being conducted from the University. There can very rarely be different expectations on design between the commissioner and University team. If this occurs, it's usually best to discuss this directly with the student. However, you can also discuss this with the Research Director if needed.
Timescales. Because our students are conducting the SEP as part of a larger clinical-research training programme, the timeline for the project is about one year from start-to-finish.
What service evaluations can our students conduct?
We are a West Yorkshire training programme and there are other partner programmes in the Humber and South Yorkshire area, so we focus on conducting evaluations in West Yorks area. We are open to evaluations from across all sectors, including the NHS, Social Care, Prisons and Probation and the Voluntary Sector.
Is there a rough guide on how big a DClin SEP should be?
Projects vary in design and size and our Academic Lecturers do keep a close eye on the project as it develops to ensure that the project is sufficiently ambitious for a doctoral student but also feasible to complete in the designated window they have in their training to complete the project. Many of the questions we will ask you below will help us to make a judgement on whether the project is a good fit for a DClin student. Our students are able to analyse existing data sets and collect new data to answer your evaluation question. Each evaluation is unique and depends on the evaluation question.
